Eccoci nuovamente alle prese con la storia cinquantennale del metal. Negli scorsi dieci mesi, a botte di cinquanta titoli per volta, vi abbiamo svelato quelli che secondo noi sono stati i cinquecento album più significativi del nostro genere preferito nei suoi cinquantant'anni di esistenza: dal temporale che apriva il primo mitico album dei Black Sabbath, ai colpi di tamburo che chiudono "Legacy of the Dark Lands" dei Blind Guardian, opera (in tutti i sensi!) che abbiamo eletto quale degna conclusione del nostro viaggio, ma che di certo non costituisce l'atto finale della saga immortale (ce lo auguriamo!) dell'heavy metal.
In questo 2020 maledetto, marchiato dalla pandemia e che ha visto un brusco rallentamento della produzione artistica a tutti i livelli (inclusa quella legata all'industria musicale - fortemente penalizzata dallo stop forzato della dimensione concertistica), non sono mancati importanti segnali di vitalità per il genere: segnali che ci fanno presagire che si parlerà di heavy metal per molto altro tempo ancora (un paio su tutti: "Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic/Cenozoic", l'album definitivo a firma The Ocean, e "Long Day Good Night", l'ultima perla rilasciata dagli inossidabili Fates Warning).
Siamo dunque fiduciosi nel volgere il nostro sguardo al futuro. E per questo, con fierezza e non per mera nostalgia, ci guardiamo ancora una volta alle spalle, riproponendovi per intero la nostra lista dei 500 migliori album dell'heavy metal (con in grassetto quei 50 titoli che riteniamo davvero davvero davvero essenziali).
